The Screening Room


We recently caught up with John Schuermann, Owner, to talk about the Screening room.

How long have you been in business?

Since May of 2014

How many locations do you have?

We have our main location in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but we have a full sales team spread out all over the country. Zach is in Virginia (and has a home showroom), Rex is in Las Vegas, Mark is in North Dakota. We have a unique business model!

How did The Screening Room get its start?

The Screening Room started with the following founding principles:

We would only sell those products that we could demonstrate to be of the best quality using controlled, level playing field testing – often with outside experts being called in to verify the legitimacy of our tests and their findings (such as our literally world-famous projector and speaker shootouts).

No selling or pushing of “snake oil” products that have no grounding in solid science.

Several of us at The Screening Room have legit credits in film and music production, so we wanted to make sure our products and the systems we design honor the intent of the artists and technicians that create the music and movies we love.

With years of practical experience in the consumer and professional audio/video worlds, and as filmmakers and musicians ourselves, we are dedicated to ensuring that the sound and picture you experience in your home reproduces the artist's vision with the utmost fidelity.

Owner John Schuermann's experience in the film, video and consumer electronics worlds and passion for home theater are what fuel The Screening Room's dedication to accurately reproducing the visions of Hollywood directors, cinematographers, composers and sound designers in homes. And his philosophy of fidelity extends to every aspect of The Screening Room -- from the crew that designs our systems, to the brands we carry, to the personalized consulting we provide for our clients.

How many people are on The Screening Room’s team?

We have 11 people on our team, including our remote sales agents and high-level consultants.

Thoughts on the importance of training?

We place an extraordinarily high value on not only training, but on making sure everyone on our team understands the basic science and physics that underpins the proper reproduction of sound and picture in the home.

What do you like most about Harman Luxury Audio products and which lines do you feature?

We offer many Harman brands, with an emphasis on Revel and JBL Synthesis. We are huge fans of the work of Drs. Floyd Toole and Sean Olive, and really appreciate how all their incredibly important work in defining what makes a good speaker pays off in those brands. It all ties into our philosophy of grounding our work in science and making sure we are accurately reproducing the efforts of filmmakers and musicians in people’s homes. As long as Harman retains its “science-based” philosophies, we will always be major proponents of Harman brands.

How do you think the luxury audio industry is currently doing?

We see two competing factions – one that pushes expensive products of questionable value to people with deep pockets, and another that tries to push the envelope in terms of verifiable improvements in product performance. As you can probably tell from the philosophies laid out above, we are big proponents of the latter and push back against the former. What we would LOVE to see at Harman is more funds allocated to expanding product lines to meet specific market demands and refining the R&D that underpins the various brands.

What is The Screening Room’s mission?

Here is our mission statement – it sums things up nicely:
