There’s nothing like a sound science factoid to whet your appetite for more sound science.
You know when Indiana Jones uses his whip to snap a weapon out of a guy's hand? Do you know where the *WHIPCRCACK* comes from? Believe it or not, it isn't when the whip makes contact with the bad guy. When handled by an expert (the only kind of person who should be playing with a whip), the end of the whip moves so fast that it actually breaks the sound barrier, thus creating a sonic boom as it changes direction!
The whip is the very first human-made device that can accomplish this fantastic feat, and the only one we know of that can do so without the benefit of some type of combustion. If you think of something else that can, let us know!
