With Meet The HARMAN Luxury Team, our goal is for you to get to know us better. How would you describe what you do in your current role?
I get to create inspiring content that conveys the thrill of using Roon to browse, discover and listen to music. I collaborate with other Roon team members to tell the story of our products and help people form a deeper connection to the music they love in ways that are inspiring, exciting, and unique to Roon.
What did you study in school? Did you always imagine yourself doing something like what you’re doing now or did the fates just take you in that direction?
I studied Music Production and American Studies as an undergrad and Information Studies with a concentration in Digital Preservation at the graduate level. I’ve always been interested in music, the people who make it, and the stories surrounding it, so it’s not that surprising that I landed at Roon and get to do those things every day.
How did your career path lead you to HARMAN?
I’ve been privileged to work in various roles related to music over the last thirty years, and joined HARMAN when Roon became part of the HARMAN family of brands in November 2023. Roon enriches people’s lives by delivering transformative music listening experiences, which makes us a perfect fit with the other companies under the HARMAN umbrella.
What is the most important thing you have learned over your career?
There’s no better reward than being part of a great team. It’s inspiring when unique talents, backgrounds and viewpoints converge. It’s a wonderful feeling to work closely with others and accomplish more together.
Any other advice you would share with people just starting out in this industry?
Create positive energy, listen first, and be open to other ideas. People remember how it feels to work alongside and be around you more than they remember what you do or say. It’s how you get invited to work with great people.
What are you most proud of in your life?
Being married to a wonderful, inspiring wife and dad to a kind, sweet and witty daughter. And, having been trusted to work in live music production with so many legendary musicians over the years.
When did you realize you had a passion for music or audio? Was there any one band, song, or movie that did it for you?
I can’t really remember a time when I wasn’t passionate about music, it’s always been a part of who I am. My grandfather loved classic country music when I was young - stuff like Jimmie Rogers, Roy Acuff, and Hank Williams. He sang in a band with friends and to the radio in the car. He was my earliest influence and probably the reason I love music as much as I do.
What current technology impresses you the most?
I’m blown away by the abundance of high-quality, low-cost audio gear and music instruments that are currently available. There are so many affordable options that weren’t available when I was younger and just starting out. Especially with music streaming, I never imagined that we’d have access to all the music in print for a few dollars a month. It’s inspiring that people have so many choices.
Favorite music genre?
Blues and American roots music.
The desert island question, of course. If you were marooned for eternity and could listen to only three albums, what would they be?
Oh gosh, this is the hardest question yet! It’s always so difficult to choose.
Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street
The Anthology of American Folk Music compiled by Harry Smith for Folkways Records
The third one is always hard… I feel like I would need an introspective jazz record. I’m going to say John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme.
You have the floor. In closing, tell us anything else you want us to know about yourself.
I began a meditation practice years ago and it's one of the best things I’ve ever done. It helps create a quiet, calm, relaxing space within that’s healing and uplifting. I’m not always consistent with it, but I always feel I’m my best self when I do it regularly. If you’ve ever been interested in meditating, I encourage you to try it. You get to spend quality quiet time with yourself. It’s wonderful.
