Each month, we have the pleasure of learning a little bit more about one of our dealers or distributors. This time we spoke with Robert Schlundt, Managing Director of HiFi im Hinterhof in Berlin.
How did HiFi im Hinterhof start up?
HiFi im Hinterhof was founded in 1979 by two students with a passion for HiFi. We began as a small independent store offering two-channel HiFi, now we are a multi-department HiFi store offering everything from classical stereo systems, high-quality surround systems, entire home theatre installations, multi-room facilities and Smart TVs. We have become the hub for high-end HiFi in Berlin with limitless possibilities in what we can offer.
Tell us more about the store.
The store consists of various departments to meet all HiFi needs. We have a 400sqm Hifi Studio for two-channel and home cinema; 300sqm for Smart TV; and 200sqm for service and repairs. Amongst the space is 17 dedicated showrooms — three home cinemas, six two-channel rooms, a special studio for headphones and portable speakers, seven TV studios, and a large room for presentations and training.
What do you want people to know about HiFi im Hinterhof?
Our philosophy is to keep a fingerprint in the people’s mind. Everything that we do is customer-oriented. We ensure that we create the best experiences so that customers keep returning for years to come. Our team has grown from two to 38 over the years and many of the team have worked for the store for more than 20 years, bringing a family feel to the company. In fact, many of our team have seen customers returning every few years for advice or upgrades to their systems. We like to build rapport with our customers, and we do this by keeping at the forefront of the latest innovations and technologies. We continually advance our knowledge and use this to create the perfect solutions for our customers. Further to this, we are a full service dealer — everything that we do is in-house from sales, marketing, installation to aftercare.
For any one project, we work as a team — it falls on many shoulders to discuss the full project, synchronising our ideas and efforts to develop the greatest system for our customers. The end-project has to be accepted and approved by all the team so that we are confident we are providing a solution that without doubt is the right fit for the customer.
The company is built on word of mouth, recommendation and positivity. Aftercare is just as important as the original sale. We also believe that to burn a fire for the customer, you need a fever in your own blood – that’s why all of our staff have a passion for audio and HiFi.
As a testament to this, I have my own Mark Levinson 519 and a 5805 with JBL Everests – big system and big sound. A great sounding system for the home.
Thoughts on the importance of training?
Training is very important to us. We learn by doing and learning what interests us. Much of our training is completed internally as we are listening and testing new systems every day in store. The passion and knowledge we have built up over the years passes from one generation to another, adding more to our family feel ethos. It also empowers us to give our customers new ideas and advice.
While much of our training is internal, we find manufacturer training very beneficial as it provides a fresh perspective to our staff. We also like to visit brands as it generates better communication and open-mindedness to new ideas.
What do they like most about HARMAN’s products and which ranges do they see as the key products?
HARMAN is a strong brand and the possibilities for Mark Levinson and JBL Premium Loudspeakers are great. They are very successful for Hifi im Hinterhof and a good showcase in our store. We started as the first dealer for Germany with the L100 Classics and we have been really successful with this product. We love the premium loudspeaker ranges, and they are a big attraction for the store.
Mark Levinson has been a well-renowned brand since the mid-90s and the new 5000 series is a great entry-level for high-end audio. We have been selling Arcam for five years in both home cinema and two-channel, and we feature both Arcam and Lexicon in our home cinema demonstration rooms.
Any final comments?
Our strength comes from the shop, and the knowledge accumulated over the years. But, we also have an online shop where this knowledge is showcased. Times are really fast, and we have decided to focus our efforts on digital rather than traditional mediums. We believe digital is essential with its ability for quick reaction and quick changes. The future is digital, and that’s why we have a good working web shop. We drive our own blogs, Youtube videos and websites all in-house.
